"Siemens Ukraine" has signed a contract with the VTP TRANSEXPO company to supply fire safety systems equipment, which are to be introduced in the new protective shelter in the form of an arch at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, known as the "New Safe Confinement".

According to the signed contract VTP Trasnekspo is supposed to implement the following Siemens fire safety systems: automatic gas fire extinguishing system (equipment and technology), fire alarm system, aspiration and monitoring systems. VTP Trasnekspo will perform installation and commissioning of the facility.

About the object

NOVARKA Consortium (France) a 50/50 joint venture formed by VINCI Construction Grands Projets (leader) and Bouygues Travaux Public in September 2007 signed a contract with the Chernobyl nuclear power plant for the project "New Safe Confinement" to design, construct and perform commissioning of the arch-shaped confinement.

The purpose of the new structure is to contain the radioactive materials, protect workers at the side as well as protect the existing shelter from weather damage. Ultimately, it will allow beginning on deconstruction of Unit 4 of the Chernobyl power plant. Life span of the confinement shelter is 100 years.

Dimensions of confinement:

  • length - 162 meters

  • height - 108 meters

  • span arch - 257 meters

  • weight metal construction - 25 000 tones

  • the total weight of the equipment - 37 000 tones

  • confinement area - 39 000 m².

Chernobyl’s New Safe Confinement (NSC) is a design and construction project unprecedented in the history of engineering.  Never before has such a huge structure been constructed at a heavily contaminated site.
